1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-028

Description

Struck during the second year of wartime silver alloy production, this 1944 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel carries the twenty-eighth documented repunched mint mark for the date. The large P mint mark positioned above Monticello on the reverse — a wartime-only placement introduced in 1942 — shows evidence of repunching visible under magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-479 and DMR-029, three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die-state develops a die scratch northeast above the far right window, followed by a die clash above the ribbon knot and behind the head at LDS. Stage C at late die state shows east-west die scratches across the upper reverse with the obverse also at LDS. The die clash marker at Stage B provides evidence that the dies made contact without a planchet during the life of this die pair, adding a secondary variety characteristic. Twenty-eight RPMs documented for the 1944-P wartime nickel reflects the enormous production volume required to supply coinage during the war years.
