1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-025

Description

One of the more collectible wartime Jefferson nickel varieties, the 1944 RPM-025 is catalogued by VarietyVista under UVC-172 and DMR-026 as a P/P West repunching — the primary P mintmark is repunched to the west of the first impression. This coin belongs to the wartime silver alloy series, struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese from mid-1942 through 1945 in response to wartime material shortages. Among the most historically notable features of these issues is the large P mintmark placed above Monticello — the first time Philadelphia had ever used a mintmark on a nickel, and the only such instance until much later. The RPM-025 die progressed through documented stages: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS with a die crack running Northwest through the hair. Repunched mint marks on wartime nickels resulted from individual hand-punching of each working die; if the engraver's first punch landed off-position, a repunch was required. The Felix Schlag design was retained throughout the wartime period, and collecting wartime Jefferson nickel RPMs combines the series' historical significance with technical variety attribution interest.
