1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-024

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-171 and DMR-025, this 1944 Philadelphia wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel shows a P/P repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the east. Three die states are documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state introduces two parallel die scratches running northwest above the right porch of Monticello, with both the obverse and reverse in mid die state condition. Stage C in late die state also remains unconfirmed. The wartime silver alloy nickels of 1943-1945 carried a large P mintmark above Monticello, the first time Philadelphia production was explicitly identified on a United States coin. This oversized mintmark required individual hand-punching into each working die, and the eastward displacement of the initial punch beneath the final position is characteristic of the slight hand misalignment that produced many RPM varieties in this series. The parallel die scratches near the porch in Stage B provide a useful secondary diagnostic for confirming mid die state attribution.
