1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-022

Description

The 1944-P Jefferson Nickel (Wartime Silver Alloy) RPM-022 is a P/P West repunched mintmark variety documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-169 and DMR-023. During 1942–1945, Jefferson Nickels were struck in a 35% silver alloy — replacing nickel needed for the war effort — and carry a large mintmark above Monticello on the reverse. Stage A represents the EDS (early die state). Stage B is the MDS (middle die state). Stage C advances to the LDS (late die state) with a notable diagnostic: die clash marks visible at the ribbon knot and in front of the chin on the reverse. The large P mintmark positioned above Monticello is unique to this wartime series; the standard Jefferson Nickel carried no mintmark from Philadelphia until 1980. The progressive clash evidence appearing at Stage C adds additional interest to this variety for collectors tracking the full die-state sequence.
