1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-018

Description

RPM-018 on the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel — Wartime Silver Alloy is a repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-165 and DMR-019. The large P mintmark above Monticello — standard on all 1942–1945 Wartime Nickels struck from 35% silver — received multiple punch applications to the working die, leaving a secondary impression that defines this attribution. Three die stages document RPM-018's progression. Stage A and Stage B details are recorded in the die marker catalog. Stage C (LDS) develops two distinct die cracks: one running from the right upper roof area of Monticello to the rim, and a second crack from Lincoln's head — an orientation marker described as running from the head position to the rim at K-12:00, following the clock-face convention for die crack location. The Stage C die cracks provide naked-eye diagnostics on LDS coins when the secondary mintmark impression has diminished. The 1944-P Wartime Nickel was struck in the penultimate year of the 35% silver alloy program, and the Stage C cracks indicate this die saw extensive use before retirement, making early-stage RPM-018 examples proportionally scarcer within the variety's known population.
