1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-016

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-163 and DMR-017, this 1944 Philadelphia wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel exhibits a P/P repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the west. Four die states have been documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at early-mid die state shows the reverse in EMDS condition with a die clash visible through the knot. Stage C at mid die state presents a die crack running from the head to the rim at the K-11:30 position, with the reverse in MDS condition. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. The wartime silver alloy nickels of 1942-1945 placed an oversized mintmark above Monticello to signal the altered composition to the public, and this enlarged P required hand-punching that made slight misalignment between successive impressions virtually inevitable. The westward offset on this RPM-016 places the secondary P directly behind the final punch position, producing a widened appearance on the left side of the mintmark that is most readily visible in the earlier confirmed die states.
