1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-015

Description

The 1944-P Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver RPM-015 is a P/P North repunched mintmark variety documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-162 and DMR-016. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A is the early to middle die state (EMDS), identifiable by die scratches running east-west through the mintmark area. Stage B is the late-middle die state (LMDS). Stage C is the late die state (LDS). The 1944-P Wartime Jefferson Nickel is struck in a 35% silver alloy mandated by wartime nickel conservation, carrying the large P mintmark above Monticello on the reverse — the distinctive mark of the wartime silver issues produced from 1942 through 1945. Because the P mintmark was hand-punched above Monticello during this period, repunched mintmark varieties are cataloged separately from the standard P-mint issues. The north-displaced repunch on RPM-015 is visible above the final mintmark position, and the east-west Stage A scratches through the mintmark provide confirmation in earlier die states.
