Description
Assigned UVC-161 and DMR-015, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-014 presents a P/P South repunched mintmark, with the secondary large P impression shifted southward from the corrected final punch position. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C places both obverse and reverse at late die state — the confirmed attribution phase for this variety. The southward secondary impression is the primary diagnostic separating RPM-014 from eastward, triple-punch, and undirected repunched mintmarks also cataloged in the 1944-P wartime silver nickel series. The 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese emergency alloy remained in use through the final year of World War II in Europe and Pacific operations, and wartime Philadelphia nickels continued carrying the large P above Monticello throughout.
