1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Struck during the wartime silver alloy period at Philadelphia, this 1944 Jefferson nickel carries RPM-013, a triple-punched mintmark showing as P/P/P with secondary impressions displaced to the east and west. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-160 and DMR-014, three die stages document the progression of this die pair. Stage A in early-to-mid die state shows both obverse and reverse in their earliest recorded condition. Stage B at mid-die state remains unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state reveals a die crack from the right upper building to the rim, another from the right lower building to the rim, and a third crack from the head to the rim at the K-12 position. The wartime silver alloy nickels of 1943 through 1945 placed the large P mintmark above Monticello's dome, and the triple punching on RPM-013 indicates the mintmark punch was applied three times with lateral displacement, creating a visually wider impression than a standard single-punch entry. The progressive die cracks in Stage C, radiating from Monticello's architectural details and Jefferson's portrait, provide strong secondary diagnostics.
