Description
RPM-010 on the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel is a repunched mintmark variety on the large wartime P mintmark, catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-157, DMR-011. The 1944 Jefferson Nickels were struck in the wartime silver alloy — 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese — with the mintmark enlarged and moved above the Monticello dome to distinguish these coins from standard composition issues and to facilitate silver recovery after the war. The large P above the dome was applied by hand punch, making repunched mintmark events a natural occurrence. Die state documentation spans three stages: Stage A is Early Die State, currently unconfirmed; Stage B — Late Middle Die State — records both the reverse and obverse at LMDS; Stage C is confirmed to exist. The wartime composition Jefferson Nickels were produced at all three active mints — Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco — from mid-1942 through 1945.
