1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Carrying catalog numbers UVC-153 and DMR-007, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-006 exhibits a P/P East repunched mintmark, with the secondary large P impression shifted east of the corrected final position. Three die stages trace the die pair: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C shows both obverse and reverse at late die state. The eastward secondary punch is the key diagnostic distinguishing RPM-006 from undirected and other-directional repunched mintmarks cataloged for the 1944-P wartime silver nickel. These nickels are struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — an emergency alloy necessitated by strategic nickel demands during World War II. The large P above Monticello marks all Philadelphia wartime silver issues, and its hand-punched application to individual working dies is the mechanical source of all repunched mintmark varieties in this series. RPM-006's confirmed LDS attribution at Stage C gives collectors a reliable die-state window for attribution.
