1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged as RPM-005 (UVC-152, DMR-006), this 1944 Philadelphia wartime Jefferson nickel carries a repunched P mintmark on the silver-composition alloy issue. Three die stages are documented. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state. Stage B at mid-die state develops die scratches running north to south in the Monticello building, with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C in late die state shows die scratches running southwest in the building, with the obverse correspondingly worn. Wartime nickels 1942-1945 bore a large mintmark above Monticello's dome to facilitate post-war sorting for silver recovery, making mintmark varieties especially visible. The oversized P was the first time Philadelphia used a mintmark, and repunched examples on the large wartime punch tend to display more dramatic secondary impressions than those on standard-sized mintmarks from other eras.
