1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged under UVC-150 and DMR-004, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-003 is among the lower-numbered repunched mintmark varieties for the third wartime silver alloy year. No directional designation is recorded for the secondary P impression on this variety. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C shows both the reverse and obverse at late die state. The LDS pairing at Stage C is the confirmed attribution phase, where the secondary mintmark impression has softened but remains detectable. Struck in the wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel continued the emergency composition program that ran from mid-1942 through 1945. By 1944, wartime silver nickel production was well-established, and the hand-applied large P mintmark process continued to generate repunching events across the working die population.
