1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Struck at Philadelphia during the wartime silver alloy program, this 1944 Jefferson nickel carries a repunched mintmark cataloged as RPM-002 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-149 and die marriage record DMR-003. The large P mintmark on the reverse above Monticello was hand-punched during the 1942-1945 wartime series, and imprecise placement produced the secondary impression visible on this die. Three documented stages trace the die's production life. Stage A represents early die state with markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state likewise remains unconfirmed. By Stage C in late die state, a die chip has developed in the right dome window on the reverse, and a die crack runs from that window southward between pillars three and four, while the obverse has reached late die state as well. Wartime silver nickels with repunched mintmarks are inherently limited to this brief four-year production window, and the progressive deterioration visible in Stage C provides collectors with a reliable attribution framework for confirming this variety.
