Description

As RPM-001 for the 1944-P wartime Jefferson Nickel, this variety holds the lead catalog position documented by VarietyVista. Die markers: UVC-148, DMR-002. Stage A: Reverse is EDS, obverse is MDS. Stage B: Reverse is MDS, obverse is LDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The asymmetry where the obverse leads the reverse in die state progression by one full stage suggests these dies were not placed into service simultaneously, or the obverse experienced accelerated wear. Struck at Philadelphia in the wartime alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese (5.0 g, 21.21 mm), the oversized P above Monticello was the first-ever P mintmark on U.S. coinage, mandated by Congress to distinguish silver-content wartime issues.
