1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-008, this 1943-S wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel shows an S/S repunching displaced to the west. The die marker references are UVC-490 and DMR-021 for the initial pairing, with the die later receiving a replacement obverse tracked under UVC-142 and DMR-009. Three stages have been identified. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows the reverse at mid die state, with a die crack developing across the hair that progresses into late die state territory. After the original obverse wore out, a fresh obverse was married to the same reverse, creating Stage C. In this final pairing, a die crack extends from the right dome southward between pillars three and four on Monticello at late die state, and the obverse die change is apparent in the mid die state condition of the replacement obverse. The obverse die swap mid-production provides an opportunity for collectors to trace how the Philadelphia Mint managed die usage during the intensive wartime coinage program.
