1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1943-S San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel features extensive die cracking concentrated at Stage C, with fractures spanning from Monticello's dome through the inscription and across Jefferson's hair. Die markers UVC-140 / DMR-007: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with a die crack from the right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 through the steps at LDS, a die crack through C of MONTICELLO south through E of CENTS to rim at K-6, a die crack southeast through hair at LDS, and a die crack southwest through upper hair. The four concurrent cracks at Stage C document catastrophic late-life die failure across the entire design. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello identifies the wartime silver alloy composition.
