1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

An S/S/S East, East triple-punched mintmark from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1943-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 tracks four die states with multiple hair cracks at Stage C. Die markers UVC-138 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from right lower building to rim at LMDS, a die crack southwest through upper hair at LMDS, and a die crack southeast through upper hair; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The dual hair cracks radiating in opposing directions — southwest and southeast — at Stage C document a Y-shaped structural failure in Jefferson's portrait. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the triple eastward S displacement documents three separate punch contacts all in the same direction.
