1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Holding the second catalog position for the 1943-S date, this VarietyVista-documented wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from San Francisco shows die cracks originating at early die state. Die markers UVC-136 / DMR-003: Stage A with reverse at EDS and a die crack from the rim at K-12 southwest through the upper hair at EDS, plus a light die crack southeast through the upper hair; Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The dual die cracks through the upper hair radiating in opposing directions — southwest and southeast — already present at EDS indicate structural flaws in the die steel from the outset of production. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello distinguished San Francisco's wartime alloy output.
