1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-019
Error
Description
Bearing attribution codes UVC-730 and DMR-093, the 1943 DDO-019 is a doubled die obverse Jefferson nickel struck in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. This emergency composition replaced the standard copper-nickel alloy to conserve nickel for military use during World War II. The obverse displays light hub-doubling spread affecting IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Light spread on multiple design elements simultaneously is consistent with a minor rotational or pivot shift between hub impressions during die manufacture. The large P mint mark above Monticello on the reverse, unique to the 1942-1945 wartime issues, helps date these nickels at a glance. Philadelphia struck 271.2 million wartime nickels in 1943, the highest single-year mintage in the series to that point. Doubled dies from the wartime nickel series attract collectors who specialize in both error varieties and World War II-era coinage.
