1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
Error
Description
Struck on the distinctive silver-alloy wartime composition, this 1943 Jefferson Nickel WDDO-009 is classified as Class I Rotated Hub Doubling, displaying close counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, the star, date, and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the strongest expression on the lower portions of these design elements. Rotated hub doubling occurs when the hub is slightly rotated between impressions during die manufacture, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot point. Obverse die markers include a die crack running southeast from the top of Jefferson's head near the 12 o'clock position, a die dot beneath the L of LIBERTY, and a die gouge extending from the upper back of the 3 in the date. The reverse carries a strong vertical die gouge to the upper right of the right arch on Monticello. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this wartime silver alloy variety pairs rotated hub mechanics with progressive die deterioration markers that help collectors pinpoint individual specimens within the die's working life.
