1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
Error
Description
Exhibiting Class I rotated hub doubling, WDDO-008 of the 1943 Jefferson Nickel in the wartime silver alloy composition shows a light counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Class I rotated hub doubling occurs when the hub rotates between impressions, producing spread that increases with distance from the rotation center. During World War II from 1942 through 1945, Jefferson Nickels were struck in a 35% silver alloy with copper and manganese to conserve nickel for the war effort, and these coins carry a large mintmark above Monticello on the reverse. Obverse die markers include a die gouge near the rim above LIB of LIBERTY and two die gouges near the rim between the digits 4 and 3 of the date. The reverse is independently listed as 1943-P 5c WDDR-007, creating a dual-variety die pairing where both sides carry cataloged doubling. The large P mintmark above Monticello on wartime issues makes these coins immediately distinguishable from standard-alloy Jefferson Nickels. Struck at Philadelphia in the wartime silver composition, this dual-variety 1943 nickel documents counterclockwise rotated hub doubling across multiple obverse elements.
