Description

Struck on the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, this 1943 Jefferson Nickel DDO-016 exhibits medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Die markers include UVC-083 and DMR-030. The reverse is listed as RPM-029, creating a multi-variety die pairing. Three die stages reveal an interesting RPM progression: Stage A shows the obverse in early-to-mid die state with the RPM-029 reverse displaying triple upper West serifs in early-to-mid die state; Stage B shows the obverse in late-mid die state with the RPM now showing double upper West serifs in late-mid die state; and Stage C is in late die state (unconfirmed). The reduction from triple to double visible serifs on the RPM across die stages demonstrates how progressive die wear can selectively erode mintmark repunching evidence. Wartime Jefferson Nickels placed the large mintmark above Monticello's dome to distinguish them from the standard copper-nickel composition, and varieties combining obverse hub doubling with reverse RPM characteristics are especially valued by specialists.
