1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014

Description

This 1943 Jefferson Nickel is a wartime silver alloy issue carrying the DDO-014 doubled die obverse, with medium-spread doubling strongest on IN GOD WE TRUST and also visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Die marriage DMR-086 with die marker UVC-729 documents Stage A in Early Die State as unconfirmed, Stage B showing both obverse and reverse in Mid-Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State also unconfirmed. Attributed by VarietyVista. From 1942 through 1945, Jefferson Nickels were struck in a special wartime alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for military use. These wartime issues are identified by the large mintmark placed above Monticello on the reverse, a position unique to the wartime composition years. The silver content gives these coins a distinctive appearance and makes them inherently more valuable than standard nickel-composition issues. With die marriage numbers reaching DMR-086, the wartime nickels clearly attracted significant die variety research attention.
