1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013

Description

One of the strongest doubled die obverses in the wartime Jefferson Nickel series, DDO-013 on the 1943-P issue shows pronounced spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. This variety also carries the Cherrypickers designation FS-103 and is paired at Stage A with DDR-001 — meaning the reverse die itself is also a recognized doubled die, making this an uncommon obverse-reverse doubled die combination on a single coin. The obverse is in early die state while the reverse shows the DDR-001 designation at the same stage. Cataloged as UVC-723 with DMR-077, the strong multi-element spread across four distinct obverse features makes DDO-013 one of the more visually dramatic varieties in the 1943 nickel census. The 1943-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy — 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese — with the distinctive large P mintmark placed above Monticello on the reverse to signal the non-standard composition to the public.
