1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-713 with die-marriage reference DMR-067, this 1943 (P) Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse was struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. The doubling presents as light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — multiple widely separated obverse elements confirming a hub-doubling event rather than mechanical doubling from strike bounce. Three die stages document the die's working life. Stage A represents the early die state, preserving the sharpest expression of the doubled legend and date before striking wear began softening the die surface. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, the most commonly encountered condition. Stage C is the late die state, where accumulated fatigue may reduce visibility of the lighter spread areas. The 1943 Philadelphia wartime nickel was produced during peak wartime output, with the large P mintmark above Monticello distinguishing it from pre-war copper-nickel issues. Doubled die varieties from wartime silver nickels carry particular collector appeal because they combine variety interest with the series' inherent silver content.
