1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as the significant FS-101 (Fivaz-Stanton #028), DDO-003 on the 1943 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays a medium spread across IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — where the doubling creates the appearance of a 3/2 overdate. This overdate impression, produced by hub doubling rather than actual die re-dating, is the feature that earned the FS-101 cross-reference and makes this one of the most collected Jefferson Nickel varieties. Die tracking reveals UVC-712 and DMR-066 across three stages: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows the obverse at MDS while the reverse is documented as DDR-002 at MDS, and Stage C shows both dies at LDS. The reverse pairing with DDR-002 creates a dual doubled die — hub doubling on both obverse and reverse — adding significant collector appeal. The 1943 date represents wartime production when Jefferson Nickels were struck in the 35% silver composition with the large mintmark above Monticello, though Philadelphia issues of this era also exist in the standard alloy. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the three-stage die progression and dual DDO/DDR pairing make DDO-003 a cornerstone variety for Jefferson Nickel specialists, with the 3/2 overdate appearance serving as the primary visual hook for cherry-pickers.
