1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, the 1943 Jefferson Nickel DDO-001 is a dual-variety die whose reverse is also listed as RPM-055. Cataloged by VarietyVista with attribution codes UVC-109 and DMR-056, the obverse exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is an early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B shows die scratches running east-west in front of the profile in a late mid-die-state, with a die crack from the right dome window of Monticello running south between pillars #3 and #4 to the steps; Stage C captures both obverse and reverse in late die state. The wartime composition — adopted from mid-1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for armor plating — prompted the Mint to relocate the mintmark above Monticello's dome, creating the distinctive large mintmark placement unique to wartime issues. The pairing of obverse doubling with a repunched mintmark on the reverse makes this die marriage especially noteworthy for variety collectors.
