1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

The 1942-S Mercury Dime RPM-006 displays the S mint mark repunched to the north (S/S North), where the initial impression was placed slightly south of the intended position and the correction punch landed at the correct location above. This northward shift distinguishes RPM-006 from RPM-002 and RPM-004 of the same date, which both show S/S West repunching — different directional shifts from different die sinkers or separate punching sessions. Under magnification, the lower portion of the initial S impression is visible extending below the final mint mark position, characteristic of a northward correction. The mint mark punch is classified as MMS-003 with a Trumpet Tail form, the same punch style found on several other 1942-S RPM varieties, indicating this particular S punch was in heavy rotation during the wartime production year at the San Francisco Mint. The 1942-S was among the final San Francisco issues of Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime, and the variety of repunching directions across different 1942-S RPMs — north, west, and other orientations — documents the inherent variability of the hand-punching process that defined mint mark application through most of American coinage history.
