1942 (S) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1942-S WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1942-S Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The left star, the lower right leaves, and the left leaves with their small branches show doubling, as do, slightly, some letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE and DIME. On the obverse, three short die scratches head NNW off the top of the D in GOD, and two nearly parallel north-south scratches lie left of the lips and chin. The reverse is also a repunched mint mark, listed by Wexler as 1942-S WRPM-005, an S/S Southwest (secondary S southwest of the primary). A short die gouge juts from the second S in STATES at its top left, and a short, heavy scratch heads NNE from the inside bottom right of the C in AMERICA. John S. Gillilan submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments add that CONECA has given the RPM a listing (RPM #5) but has not listed the doubled die reverse.
