Description

Documented as UVC-555 and DMR-051, the 1942-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-036 exhibits a P/P South repunched mintmark, with the secondary P punch displaced to the south of the corrected final mintmark position. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid die state; Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The southward secondary impression is the primary attribution characteristic separating RPM-036 from the northward, eastward, and undirected repunches cataloged across the 1942-P wartime nickel die population. These coins are struck in the 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese emergency alloy that gave wartime Jefferson Nickels their distinctive silver appearance and unique large-mintmark convention. The 1942-P wartime nickel stands out historically as the first U.S. coin to bear the Philadelphia Mint's P mintmark, establishing a tradition that continued on other denominations in subsequent decades.
