Description

With a P/P Northwest displacement, this VarietyVista-cataloged 1942 Philadelphia wartime silver Jefferson Nickel awaits specimen submission for new digital color photographs. Die markers UVC-530 / DMR-048: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack from the right dome south to steps between pillar #3 and #4 at MDS, die scratches North-South on upper reverse, and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The dome-to-steps die crack traces a path through the Monticello architectural detail, following a natural stress concentration between pillar supports. The northwest displacement on the oversized P documents punch misalignment direction during die preparation. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-P was the debut year for the P mintmark on U.S. coinage, introduced to distinguish wartime silver nickels.
