1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-033

Description

Among the highest-numbered RPMs for its date, this P/P South repunched mintmark appears on a 1942 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel struck in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. The large P mintmark — placed above Monticello on the reverse for the first time in U.S. coinage history — was hand-punched into the working die with a southward shift visible on close examination. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-499 and DMR-044 across three stages. In early die state, a die gouge dot appears in the field under the N of UNUM on the reverse, and the obverse shows early die state characteristics. Mid-die state remains unconfirmed. By late die state, a light die crack runs north-south through the hair on the obverse, and the reverse shows late die state wear. The 1942 wartime nickels represent the first year of the emergency silver alloy composition, introduced to conserve nickel for military use. High-magnification digital color photographs of this variety are still needed to fully document the repunching detail across all die stages.
