Error
Description
A P/P South displacement on the first-ever Philadelphia Mint coin to carry a mintmark, this VarietyVista-documented 1942-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-031 tracks four progressive die states. Die markers UVC-457 / DMR-036: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse at LDS and a die gouge dot in the field by the middle of the bridge of the nose at LDS; Stage D with a die break above the right roof at LDS and obverse at LDS. The Stage D die break above the roof documents structural failure on the reverse in the late die state. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized P was introduced in 1942 to distinguish wartime silver-content nickels from standard copper-nickel issues, making this the debut year for P mintmarks on U.S. coinage.
