Error
Description
With a P/P South displacement, this 1942 Philadelphia wartime Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista as the 28th RPM for the debut year of the oversized P above Monticello. Die markers UVC-038 / DMR-033: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B MDS with a die scratch from the lower S of PLURIBUS, obverse MDS; Stage C reverse and obverse LDS. The die scratch from the S provides a mid-state reverse marker. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-P was the first U.S. coin to bear a Philadelphia P mintmark. Congress mandated the oversized mintmark so the public could distinguish silver-content coins from standard issues. Twenty-eight cataloged RPMs for this single debut date reflect the unfamiliarity of applying the new large P punch during the program's earliest months. P/P South.
