1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-025

Description

Assigned UVC-035 and DMR-030, this 1942-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-025 shows a P/P East repunched mintmark — the initial large P punch landed to the east of the corrected final position, leaving a secondary impression visible to the east of the primary mintmark. Three die stages document the die pair: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid die state; Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The eastward direction of the secondary punch is the defining attribute that separates RPM-025 from other cataloged 1942-P wartime nickel repunched mintmarks. These Jefferson Nickels were struck in the emergency 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese wartime alloy as nickel was diverted to armor plate and other military applications. The distinctive oversized P above Monticello on the reverse identifies these as silver-composition issues, and the hand-applied mintmark process generated numerous distinct repunching events across the many dies needed for wartime production.
