Recorded by VarietyVista with P/P South displacement, this 1942 Philadelphia wartime Jefferson Nickel carries a repunched P placed initially north of the intended position above Monticello's dome. Die markers: UVC-034, DMR-029. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed). Stage C: Reverse is LDS; light die crack in back of hair — LDS. The late-stage hair crack documents structural fatigue in the portrait area during the die's final production. The 1942-P was the first American coin to bear a P mintmark, mandated by Congress to distinguish the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy from standard copper-nickel. Weighing 5.0 g (21.21 mm), the 24th cataloged RPM reflects first-year challenges of applying the unfamiliar large P punch, new tooling developed specifically for the wartime nickel program.
