1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-019

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1942-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel records a mid-production obverse die change with distinctive late-state markers. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-028 / DMR-023 for Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at EMDS; Stage C with a light die crack down the right edge of the right tall window at LDS and a light die crack in the hair at LDS. Then UVC-029 / DMR-024: Stage D with reverse at VLDS, the obverse die changed at VLDS, a light die crack in the hair, and a die gouge dot between the collar and ribbon on Jefferson's queue. The queue die gouge dot at Stage D is a diagnostically precise marker located in the small area between the collar and ribbon of Jefferson's pigtail. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, bearing the first-ever P mintmark on U.S. coinage.
