1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-018

Description

Showing a P/P/P Southwest, South triple-punched mintmark, this 1942 Philadelphia wartime Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-027 / DMR-022: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B MDS with reverse MDS and a light die crack in Jefferson's hair; Stage C reverse and obverse LDS. The hair crack at Stage B provides a mid-state obverse marker. Triple-punched mintmarks document three separate punch contacts, with the Southwest and South displacements indicating the initial placement was too far northeast, followed by two corrections. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-P was the inaugural wartime silver nickel and first coin with a Philadelphia P mintmark. A triple punch on the debut year of the large P suggests engravers were still developing technique for this unfamiliar oversized punch. P/P/P Southwest, South.
