1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-016

Description

The 1942-P Jefferson nickel RPM-016 is a repunched mintmark variety struck during the first year of the wartime silver alloy. In October 1942, the Mint shifted nickel composition to 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — and Philadelphia nickels received a large P above Monticello for the first time. RPM-016 carries VarietyVista identifiers UVC-025 and DMR-020. Die stages: Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed; Stage B shows a die scratch from the R of PLURIBUS to the dome at middle die state, with the obverse at late middle die state; Stage C is late die state with the obverse at very late die state, unconfirmed. The secondary P impression sits at a slightly different position than the primary, producing an overlapping mintmark image visible under magnification. Wartime silver nickels tend to show die wear more readily than the standard alloy, making die-stage transitions well documented for this era.
