1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1942-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint bears the first-ever P mintmark on a U.S. coin, placed above Monticello to distinguish the emergency 35% silver alloy from standard copper-nickel issues. Die markers UVC-022 / DMR-017: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a light die crack from right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 to steps at MDS, a strong circular die scratch through UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack south from steps to T of CENTS at LMDS and obverse at LMDS; Stage D with a die crack from mintmark north to rim at LDS, a die crack from mintmark south to dome, and obverse at LDS. The Stage D cracks radiating both north and south from the mintmark document bidirectional structural failure centered on the P. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams.
