1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Cataloged as RPM-010 (UVC-019, DMR-014), this 1942 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel carries a repunched P mintmark on the wartime silver alloy composition. Three die stages are documented. Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state. Stage B has both sides at mid-die state. Stage C in late die state develops a die crack from the right side of Monticello's dome running south between pillars three and four to the midway point, while the obverse is also in late die state. The 1942-P wartime nickel was struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, with the large P mintmark placed above Monticello's dome for the first time in Philadelphia Mint history. This oversized mintmark facilitated post-war sorting for silver recovery and makes repunched mintmark varieties on wartime nickels considerably more visible than on standard-sized mintmarks. The dome crack in Stage C provides a useful secondary diagnostic for die-state identification, as it runs through an area of the design with clean fields that make cracks easy to spot.
