Description
Exhibiting a P/P/P West, South triple-punched displacement, this VarietyVista-documented 1942 Philadelphia wartime silver Jefferson Nickel shows die deterioration escalating from a crack to a full break. Die markers UVC-016 / DMR-011: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with die gouges through RIBU of PLURIBUS at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a light die crack over the right roof at LDS and a light die crack in the back of hair at LDS; Stage D with the roof crack advancing to a die break over the right roof at LDS and obverse at LDS. The crack-to-break progression on Monticello's roof documents advancing structural failure. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-P features the first-ever Philadelphia mintmark on U.S. coinage, distinguishing the wartime silver alloy from standard issues.
