1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

RPM-003 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1942-P Jefferson Nickel — Wartime Silver Alloy issue, cataloged UVC-012 and DMR-007. The 1942-P Wartime Nickel was struck from 35% silver alloy, and the large P mintmark was placed above Monticello on the reverse rather than at the standard right-side position, making repunching on this mintmark style particularly visible. Three die stages chart the variety's progression. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed. Stage B (MDS) develops a die crack running from K-12 to K-6 through the left side of the mintmark — a strong confirming die marker that links Stage B coins definitively to this variety. Stage C (LDS) advances both the obverse and reverse into late-die-state condition. The large-P mintmark format of 1942–1945 Wartime Nickels was instituted partly to signal the changed composition to handlers who might otherwise melt the coins for their nickel content; the oversized punch also made repunching events more visually prominent when they occurred, giving RPM-003 a degree of visibility unusual for Jefferson Nickel mintmark varieties.
