1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-0272 and DMR-023, this 1942-D Washington Quarter repunched mintmark features the secondary D impression displaced to the southeast of the primary, recorded as D/D Southeast. Three die stages are documented. Stage A: both reverse and obverse in early-to-middle die state. Stage B: middle die state, unconfirmed. Stage C, the late die state: a die crack appears through NIT of UNITED on the reverse, and a light die crack crosses the bust on the obverse — a pairing of late-state cracks allowing confident Stage C attribution when both are present. The D/D Southeast displacement is characteristic of a punch applied in a lower-right position before a corrective re-application centered the final mark. Washington Quarter repunched mintmarks from the early 1940s are actively sought by variety specialists; the 90% silver issues of this period were produced under wartime volume pressures that increased mintmark placement inconsistencies. The 1942-D Washington Quarter is a common date in circulated grades but carries significant variety interest.
