1942 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-D Washington quarter with very strong doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-25-1942D-101 (015). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records an extremely strong clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the queue and LIBERTY. On the obverse a crack heads east across the hair on top of the head and ends at the T in LIBERTY, at its lower left. On the reverse Wexler lists a strong horizontal gouge in the top of the O of DOLLAR, a crack from US of PLURIBUS to the upper left wing, a crack heading east behind the eagle's head, a strong scratch joining the tops of the E and S in STATES, and a short strong gouge sticking out from the upper right of the R in QUARTER. Jim Lafferty submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I and Breen as #4315. VarietyVista credits Natalie Halpern. Under UVC-0251 and DMR-002, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. Stage C, late, has a crack across the upper hair reaching the T of LIBERTY, a crack across the bust, a crack down the eagle's right wing, a crack from US of PLURIBUS to the wing beneath AMER of AMERICA, and a crack heading east off the back of the eagle's head. Under UVC-0252 and DMR-003, stage D pairs the late obverse with a changed reverse die, also late.
