1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

The 1942-D Washington Quarter RPM-006 is a D/D South repunched mintmark variety documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-0271 and DMR-022. The initial D mintmark punch was placed and a second punch applied slightly to the south, leaving the displaced primary impression visible to the north of the accepted final position. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A is the early die state (EDS), Stage B is the middle die state (MDS), and Stage C is the late die state (LDS). The 1942-D Washington Quarter is a 90% silver coin struck at the Denver Mint during the Second World War. The Washington Quarter series, introduced in 1932 with John Flanagan's portrait design, continued production throughout the war years without composition changes — unlike the cent (steel) and nickel (35% silver alloy) series, which were altered to conserve strategic metals. Repunched mintmarks on Denver-mint quarters of this era reflect the hand-punching practices of the period.
