Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1942-D Washington Silver Quarter carries die markers UVC-0269 / DMR-020 documenting a three-stage die life that culminates in significant structural deterioration. Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS with a die crack running south from the N of UNITED along the outside of the eagle's wing, plus a die crack across the bust. Struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. The die crack tracing from UNITED along the wing follows a natural stress concentration where the inscription meets the high-relief eagle design. John Flanagan designed the Washington Quarter, and the 1942-D was produced during wartime when Denver balanced silver quarter output alongside other critical denominations needed for military and civilian commerce.
