Description

1942-D WDDO-010 is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows as a weak bar under LIBERTY's L and as doubling on the I of IN. On the Stage A obverse there are two faded gouges at the rim over TRUST's S and T; a curving scratch running NE through the opening of GOD's D toward the rim; and a series of light SW-NE scratches on and behind the back of the hair. On Stage B areas of die deterioration line the right edges of the date's 4 and 2, a faded gouge appears under the chin, and every other Stage A marker has worn away. The reverse is a doubled die too, which Wexler's doubled die files list as 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-005. Its Stage A has a crack that leaves the right wheat tip at its upper right edge and runs north into the field; die damage on the upper left wheat lines; die damage through the second S of STATES; and a faded NW-SE scratch between the bottom of ONE's E and the top of CENT's T. On Stage B the damage through the last S of STATES and at the right wheat tip's upper right edge is still visible, though more worn, many gouges fill the upper and lower openings of UNITED's N, and a dot sits inside the lower right opening of OF's O. Daniel Griffin submitted Stage A and John A. Wexler Stage B, with updated photos taken on a coin from Daniel Griffin. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler notes the die first carried the number 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-005, a number that turned out to belong to an unrelated variety, so it was renumbered 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-010.
