1942 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

1942-D WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling appears on the underside of LIBERTY's L. The obverse also carries a repunched mint mark, which Wexler's RPM listings give as 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-008. On Stage A there are many irregular gouges over the neck, jaw, cheek, and shoulder; a horizontal scratch right of GOD's D; two mostly horizontal scratches over TRUST's UST; and a strong, curving scratch running mostly southeast from the front hair curl. On Stage B every Stage A marker is still visible but weaker, a scratch runs from the upper hair to the rim left of GOD's O, and after abrasion a series of scratches runs mostly southeast from the front hair curl. On Stage C the Stage A markers are still weakly visible, and on Stage D they are extremely weak. On the reverse, Stage A has a series of scratches between CENT's C and the second T of STATES, and a long scratch between STATES' E and S. On Stage B those are weaker and a light scratch lies near the rim to the left of the left wheat tip. On Stage C they are weaker still, and a series of vertical scratches appears around the right wheat tip. On Stage D the Stage A markers are extremely weak, the scratches through CENT's T and at the right wheat tip have worn away, and light NE-to-SW diagonal scratches cross the lower wheats and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Brian Ribar submitted Stages A and B, Bill Wilson Stage C, and J.C. Moreland Stage D. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments add that the doubling under the L shows on every stage, while the RPM can no longer be seen by Stage B; that Brian Ribar took the Stage A photos for the Wexler Doubled Die Files; and that the former 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-007 listing proved to be later stages of this die and was added here as Stages C and D. Neither CONECA nor Coppercoins lists the doubled die, though both list the RPM: CONECA as RPM #7 and Coppercoins as 1942D-1MM-007.
